N°02 — The project
The building does one thing well: it lets the light in a little at a time.
One volume, one gesture
The brief asked for a flexible hall for touring exhibitions on a hillside of cork oak and scrub, an hour from the city. We proposed a single low volume of pale in-situ concrete, set on a plinth of local limestone so it sits just above the dry ground rather than on it.
Inside, one long gallery runs the length of the building. Narrow slots in the roof drop blades of sunlight across the stone floor, and along the south side a colonnade of square piers shades a covered walk that catches the last of the evening light.
Built to be moved, kept to stay
The pavilion was designed to be dismantled after three years. The region kept it. The concrete, acid-washed to reveal the sand in the mix, has weathered to the colour of the plinth, and the building now looks less like an installation and more like part of the hill.
